Dramatic Cornwall Sunsets: Rugged Cliffs & Hidden Coves
Best Places to Watch the Sunset in Cornwall
Why Cornwall is Made for Sunset Watching
There's a particular kind of magic that happens along the Cornish coastline just before the sun disappears. The light turns amber, the sea goes molten and for a few minutes, everything stops.
Cornwall has more than its fair share of places to witness this: dramatic headlands, hidden coves and wild clifftops and once you've watched the sun sink into the Atlantic from the right spot, you'll spend the rest of your holiday chasing that feeling again.
The Headland is perfectly placed to help you do exactly that, from the clifftop itself to day trips across the peninsula.
Perched on the far-southwestern tip of England, Cornwall enjoys a geographical advantage that gifts it with longer, more lingering golden hours than almost anywhere else in the country. This extended time of soft, amber light gives the beautiful Cornish Landscape a more magical feel than the rest of the UK.

The region’s dramatic cliffs serve as a naturally cinematic backdrop, where rugged, jagged cliffs meet the sweeping curves of the sandy beaches. Wherever you choose to watch the Sunset in Cornwall, the view you get whilst looking over the horizon never gets old.
Whether you are standing on a towering, windswept headland or tucked away in a sheltered cove, the perspective shifts entirely. Cornwall’s diverse coastline means you can experience a completely different sunset every day of the week, as the light hits the water and the variety of rock formations.
In Newquay, the north-facing orientation of the coast is particularly special. At Fistral Beach, this positioning allows the sun to sink directly over the ocean horizon, painting the sky in various shades of amber, red and yellow. As the light intensifies, the surfers scattered across the swells are transformed into striking silhouettes against the glowing horizon.

We have curated a practical, experience-led guide to top sunset spots across Cornwall.
- Fistral Beach, Newquay
Right on our doorstep, located directly below the iconic clifftops of The Headland, Fistral Beach is arguably the most dramatic sunset spot in North Cornwall. As the sun dips toward the Atlantic, the beach is filled in a warm golden glow, often backlighting the last surfers of the day. (Guests staying in our Sea-View Cottages can enjoy this view from the comfort of their own private decks!).
- Towan Head, Newquay (4-minute Drive)
For an uninterrupted 180-degree ocean view, head to Towan Head. This rugged outcrop frames the northern end of Fistral Beach and is just a short, bracing coastal walk from the hotel. It’s the perfect spot to stretch your legs and breathe in the salt air before heading back for dinner at RenMor.
- Bedruthan Steps (15-minute Drive)
Managed by the National Trust, this stretch of coastline is famous for its giant rock stacks. At sunset, these massive slate pillars create extraordinary silhouettes against the burning sky. It is a must-visit for photographers and families looking for that famous Cornish landscape.
- Trevose Head (30-minute Drive)
If you fancy a short scenic drive from Newquay, Trevose Head offers a vast, exposed horizon. Home to a majestic lighthouse and teeming with seabirds, this headland feels like the edge of the world - perfect for those who want to escape the crowds.
- St Agnes Head (30-minute Drive)
Wild cliffs and the ruins of Cornwall’s rich mining heritage define St Agnes Head. As the light fades, the views looking south towards Chapel Porth are particularly stunning, showcasing the historic engine houses perched precariously above the waves.
- Porthleven (1-hour Drive)
A charming working harbour with a southwest aspect. It is widely regarded as one of Cornwall’s best sunset dining spots. The culture of fine food and wine here mirrors the culinary excellence you’ll find back at The Headland.

Located further south, the turquoise waters and white sand make this an exceptional day trip. Seeing the sun set over the serpentine rock formations is a bucket-list experience.
- Sennen Cove (1-hour Drive)
Situated near Land’s End, Sennen offers the beauty of a working fishing village without the typical tourist crowds. It provides a raw, authentic look at the Cornish coast as the day comes to a close.
