The Best Places to Surf in Cornwall: A Local's Guide

Sticking out into the North Atlantic, Cornwall is positioned to catch swells that barely touch the rest of the UK.

Here's our honest guide to the best places to surf in Cornwall, whether you're picking up a board for the first time or you've been chasing waves for decades.

Fistral Beach, Newquay

Fistral is known as the home of British surfing; it's a west-facing beach break that catches consistent Atlantic swell year-round.

It draws everyone from beginners to the pros who come for events like the English National Surfing Championships and Boardmasters Festival.

The beach works at all tides, with South Fistral offering slightly more sheltered conditions when the swell is pushing hard.

The Cribbar is a deep-water reef off Towan Headland that produces some of the biggest rideable waves in the UK on the right winter swell.

The Headland sits directly above Fistral, so guests can check the surf from their room and be in the water within minutes.

Our Fistral View rooms and suites look straight out over the break, so you'll know exactly when to paddle out.

Watergate Bay

Just a short drive from Newquay, Watergate Bay offers two miles of wide golden sand backed by dramatic cliffs.

It faces directly west into the Atlantic, catching great swells from a range of directions and it's one of the rare beaches that works reliably at all states of the tide.

On a good day, the waves here are powerful and consistent, perfect for the intermediate and more experienced surfers.

The bay is well set up for a full day out, with surf schools, hire equipment and cafes right on the beach. It's busy in summer but the size of the beach absorbs the crowds.

Perranporth

About 15 miles south of Newquay, Perranporth is one of Cornwall's largest beaches, over three miles of sand at low tide, with waves to match.

It picks up swell consistently from the west and northwest and works at all tides, making it one of the most reliable options on the north coast.

The waves tend to be more forgiving than Fistral or Watergate Bay, which makes it popular with learners and improvers, though it still delivers quality surf when the swell is up.

A drink in The Watering Hole adds to its appeal after a session.

Polzeath

On the north Cornish coast near Rock and Padstow, Polzeath is one of the most family-friendly surf beaches in the county.

The wide sandy bay feels safe and welcoming, ideal for those learning to stand up. It's been on the family holiday lists for generations and the beach is lively in summer.

Polzeath is hard to beat for beginners and those with children.

Constantine Bay

Constantine Bay is one of the best options on the north coast for surfers who know what they're doing.

This exposed beach break near Padstow is known for fast, powerful, hollow waves. On a solid north-west swell with offshore winds, it can be exceptional.

When the surf is inconsistent here, Newquay is only 30 minutes down the road.

Sennen Cove

Near the very tip of Cornwall at Land's End, Sennen Cove is one of those beaches that rewards the drive.

A beautiful curved bay with clean, powerful waves and clear Atlantic water, it faces south-west and picks up a strong swell. The waves break long and consistently and the scenery is beautiful.

Just around the headland, Gwenver Beach is worth a look for a quieter session in similar conditions. The village itself has everything you need, including a great pub.

Gwithian Beach, Hayle

At the northern end of St Ives Bay, Gwithian offers a long, open stretch of beach with consistent, rolling waves that are well suited to longboarders and those working through the intermediate stages of surfing.

The beach faces north-west and picks up clean swell reliably, particularly in autumn when the crowds have thinned and the conditions are at their best.

It's a scenic spot with the Godrevy Lighthouse visible across the bay; it has a relaxed atmosphere compared to the busier breaks.

Harlyn Bay

On the north coast near Padstow, Harlyn Bay works even when everywhere else is blown out.

Sheltered by a natural headland, it picks up south-westerly swell while staying protected from the north-westerly winds. On a stormy day, Harlyn is often the answer.

The waves are generally more mellow than the exposed beaches further south, making it a solid option for all levels, particularly intermediates looking for an uncrowded session.

A Few Practical Notes

Wetsuits

Cornwall's water temperature sits between around 9°C in winter and 18°C in summer. A 4/3mm wetsuit is the common choice from October through to May. A 3/2 mm will see you through summer comfortably. Boots, gloves and a hood are worth considering in the depths of winter.

Best Time of Year

Autumn is the season most experienced Cornish surfers will recommend. September and October bring consistent Atlantic swells; the summer crowds have gone and the water retains warmth from the warmer months. Spring is underrated too. Summer offers predictable weather but the most crowded line-ups.

Surf Schools

Every major beach has at least one reputable surf school operating in season. Most schools cater to complete beginners to those wanting to improve specific skills. Book ahead in summer.

Boardmasters

Every August, Fistral Beach hosts Boardmasters, one of Europe's biggest surf and music festivals. If you're planning a trip around the event, book accommodation well in advance.

Staying at The Headland

If you're planning a surf trip to Cornwall, The Headland puts you as close to Fistral Beach as it's possible to get in a five-star hotel.

Our Fistral View rooms and suites look directly out over the break, so you can time your sessions to the tide without leaving your room.

After a morning in the sea, the AquaClub's pools and spa facilities offer a restorative welcome back to dry land.

Dinner at Restaurant RenMor or Ugly Butterfly by Adam Handling makes for a fitting end to a day spent in the Atlantic.
