The Best Dog-Friendly Beaches in Cornwall
Cornwall is blessed with an array of year-round dog-accessible beaches, boasting some of the best in the UK. The mild climate and outdoor culture create a relaxed yet adventurous atmosphere to let your pooches run wild.
Here are some of our favourite places to visit on our days off and we’re delighted to share them.
Fistral Beach: The Iconic Year-Round Dog-Friendly Beach
Just steps from our doorstep, Fistral Beach is perfect for long walks and surf-watching. Dogs are welcome year-round, making it a go-to spot no matter the season. After your stroll, there are dog-friendly restaurants and cafes nearby where you and your pup can relax.
Watergate Bay: Wide Sands & Dog-Friendly Dining (10-minute drive from The Headland)
Watergate Bay offers a two-mile sandy stretch ideal for energetic dogs who love to run and play. Sunrise and sunset walks here are spectacular, with plenty of space to let your dog off-lead. Several dog-friendly cafés and restaurants are located along the beach, perfect for refuelling after a long walk. On-site parking is available, though it’s best to arrive early during busy periods.
Holywell Bay: Quieter Dog-Friendly Escape (15-minute drive from The Headland)
For a more peaceful experience, Holywell Bay offers scenic dunes and calm walks, perfect for photography and relaxing with your dog. You might recognise Holywell from its role as a film location for James Bond and House of the Dragon. This quieter spot is ideal if you want to avoid the crowds. Dogs are welcome year-round and there’s parking nearby for easy access.
Perranporth Beach: Vast Sands & Dog-Friendly Pub (20-minute drive from The Headland)
Perranporth Beach boasts huge open spaces at low tide and dunes for dogs to explore. The Watering Hole pub on the beach welcomes dogs, so you can enjoy a refreshment while your pup relaxes. It’s a great spot for families and dogs who love space to roam. Ample parking is available nearby but it can get busy on sunny summer days.
Tips for Planning the Perfect Beach Holiday With Your Dog
Taking your dog on a beach holiday in Cornwall can be a fantastic experience. With a little planning, you and your pup can enjoy every moment.
Here are our top tips:
Packing Essentials
If you’re staying with us, then you will be pleased to know that we provide warm blankets, doggy bags, yummy treats and handy bowls for your fur babies. Other essentials we recommend include towels, dog-friendly sun cream, nibbles and a basic first-aid kit. These items will keep your dog safe, happy and clean during long days on the sand.
Car Journey Tips
Long drives can be tiring for dogs. Bring a comfortable travel bed or blanket, take regular stops for water and toilet breaks and never leave your dog alone in a hot car. Ensuring a stress-free journey will help your dog arrive ready for fun.
Hydration & Hot-Weather Safety
Dogs can overheat quickly, especially on sandy beaches under the sun. Always bring fresh water, provide shade where possible and avoid walking during the hottest part of the day. Wetting your dog’s paws in the sea or bringing a small portable water bowl can make a big difference. At The Headland, we have plenty of water bowls dotted around for thirsty pooches.
Beach Etiquette
Respect other beachgoers and Cornish wildlife by keeping your dog under control. Use leads where required, practice recall and always pick up after your dog. Following these simple rules ensures everyone enjoys their time here in Cornwall.
Sample 3-Day Itinerary for a Dog Friendly Beach Holiday
Planning a short break with us? Here’s a suggested three-day itinerary to make the most of the region’s stunning beaches and coastal walks.
Day 1: Arrival & Fistral Beach Walk
After checking with us here at The Headland, head straight to Fistral Beach for a gentle walk along the sand. Let your pup stretch their legs while you take in the iconic surf and sea views. Wrap up the day with a comforting hot chocolate by the fire in our cosy and elegant ballroom.
Day 2: Watergate Bay Exploration
Spend the day at Watergate Bay, enjoying its wide, open sands perfect for energetic dogs. Take in sunrise or sunset views along the two-mile stretch or try some water-based fun if your dog enjoys splashing in the shallows. Refuel at one of the dog-friendly eateries nearby before heading back for a relaxing evening.
Day 3: Coastal Walks & Relaxation
On your final day, explore some of Cornwall’s scenic coastal paths and quieter beaches, such as Holywell Bay. These areas are ideal for calm walks, photography or simply relaxing with your pup.
We know that beach days can leave pups a little sandy, which is why we’re excited to introduce our new ‘Self-Service Dog Wash.’ After a long day on the sand, the last thing you want is to battle a sandy car, room or cottage. Conveniently located in The Square, this handy machine washes and blow-dries your furry friend, making cleanup a breeze.
