It started in 1982, when twelve like-minded hoteliers decided the finest independent places to stay deserved to be found together. Today the collection runs to more than fifty - in cities, deep in the countryside and like us, right on the coast. What holds it together isn't sameness. It's a shared belief in British heritage, in knowing where things come from and in service that's warm and genuinely meant. Every hotel keeps its own character. That's rather the point.

The idea is a simple one: match every guest with a stay worth remembering. To keep the standard where it should be, each member is inspected every year. New hotels have to pass an anonymous overnight inspection, then win a vote of the existing members. No shortcuts.

In 2022, PoB Hotels partnered with EarthCheck, one of the world's leading sustainability certification programmes, a real commitment to travelling more responsibly and to better practice across every hotel in the collection. We took the same step in 2023 and it's become one of the things we're proudest of. With Bethany Branigan, our Sustainability Lead, driving the work, we reached EarthCheck Bronze in 2024 and Silver in 2025, then were named Sustainable Hotel of the Year at the Hotel Cateys.
