2026 with The National Lobster Hatchery

Little Claws, Big Cause

A little update from The Headland and our friends at the National Lobster Hatchery.

The National Lobster Hatchery
Just up the coast in Padstow, The National Lobster Hatchery is a local charity doing something rather wonderful for our seas. For years they've been dedicated to protecting the European lobster, a species under real pressure from heavy fishing, environmental hazards and over-exploitation.

In the wild, the odds are stacked against a baby lobster from the moment it hatches and very few make it through those vulnerable early weeks. At the hatchery, they're looked after from egg to adolescence, cared for meticulously until they're big and brave enough to fend for themselves. Then they're released into the ocean to begin a new life.

Room service or a baby lobster?
We wanted to make it easy for our guests to get involved, without any fuss. So every room here at The Headland has a door hanger offering a simple choice - room service as usual or a baby lobster released into the wild instead.
Hang it on your door handle and somewhere off the Cornish coast a very small lobster gets released into the wild.
It's one small decision and as it turns out, lots of small decisions add up to something quite special!

The story so far in 2026
Here's where we've got to this year, thanks to the National Lobster Hatchery and our guests who've made that important choice:

🌊 1,558 baby lobsters released into the wild
🌊 £7,790 raised for the hatchery

That's 1,558 lobsters that have had the best possible start in life along with money raised for The National Lobster Hatchery, who are doing such an incredible job at what they do.

Thank you
A huge thank you to every guest and to the brilliant team at the National Lobster Hatchery for everything they do all year round. Next time you stay with us, keep an eye out for the hanger on your door. The lobsters will be ever so grateful.

If you're exploring the coast during your stay, the hatchery's visitor centre in Padstow is really worth a visit, especially for those with young families. Go and say hello to the little ones before they head out to sea or keep an eye out on our socials for Lobster release dates and join us at the beach.
