Public Fireworks & Entertainment

New Year in Cornwall isn't just a late-night, adults-only affair. Plenty of towns build in earlier celebrations and daytime entertainment so younger family members get their own countdown before bed. Some Cornish towns run an early mini fireworks display around 8pm, so families can join the fun without keeping toddlers up until 12.

Newquay New Year's Eve Fireworks

• Date & time: 31 December 2026, midnight.
• Location: Anywhere with a view over Newquay Harbour and the bay.
• Details: Newquay Town Council puts on the display and most of the bars, restaurants and hotels around town run their own parties and dinners in the hours before it.

Looe New Year's Eve Displays

• Date & time: 31 December 2026, evening. An early, family-friendly display goes up around 6pm, with the main show at midnight.
• Location: Looe Harbour and the vantage points around it.
• Details: Looe runs two separate displays rather than one. The early show suits families with younger kids who won't make it to midnight; the later one is the big draw, with the crowd gathering over the estuary for the countdown.

St Ives New Year's Eve

• Date & time: 31 December 2026, fireworks at midnight.
• Location: St Ives Harbour and the streets leading down to it.
• Details: This is the one people travel for. Tens of thousands turn out in fancy dress, filling the streets before everyone converges on the harbour to watch the fireworks reflect off the water at midnight. Free to attend, no tickets needed; just get there early before the streets close.

Hotels with indoor pools and spas are a great shout for families over New Year, since the weather is rarely cooperative. The Headland's family-friendly setup includes access to the AquaClub's indoor pools, which takes the pressure off if the wind's coming in sideways off Fistral. Between a splash in the pool, a wander down to the beach and a fireworks display in town, that's a full day sorted without anyone needing a nap-induced meltdown at 6pm.

New Year's Day Dips & Beach Activities

The New Year's Day dip is one of Cornwall's more committed traditions and it isn't just for the hardy few. Hundreds turn out at beaches across the county, usually in fancy dress, often for charity. Newquay Harbour draws a crowd, and further along the coast, Penzance and Bude run their own organised swims, several with hot drinks waiting on the sand afterwards.

Newquay Harbour Dip for CLIC (Young Lives vs Cancer)

• Date & time: 1 January, 12pm, weather permitting.
• Location: Newquay Harbour, TR7 1HR.
• Details: This one's been running for years and has built up a proper following, with most people turning up in fancy dress. Hot drinks and bacon butties wait for you once you're out.
• Cost: £10 for adults, £5 for under-16s, cash preferred. Sponsorship's an option too if you want to raise a bit for the cause while you're at it.

Jubilee Pool New Year's Day Dip

• Date & time: 1 January, 11am. The café's open from 10am to 2pm either side of it.
• Location: Jubilee Pool, Battery Road, Penzance, TR18 4FF.
• Details: The pool's geothermally heated, so this is a slightly gentler version of the New Year dip than jumping straight into the open sea, though it's still bracing enough. Hot drinks are on hand the moment you climb out.

Other spots worth knowing about

Bude Sea Pool, on Summerleaze Beach, is a semi-natural tidal pool that takes the edge off an open-water dip without softening it completely. Free to use, donations welcome.

Polzeath and Harlyn Bay tend to draw informal groups rather than an organised event; a scattering of hardy swimmers who turn up and just get on with it. Timings shift with the weather and sea conditions, so there's no fixed slot to plan around; just check the forecast and see who else is mad enough to be there.

If you're staying at The Headland, Fistral Beach is right on the doorstep and the beach webcam is a handy way to check conditions before you commit to the walk down. Not everyone fancies the full dip and that's fine too. A brisk walk along the sand on the 1st of January, watching everyone else brave the water, is its own kind of tradition.

New Year's Eve Events & Celebrations

Newquay throws one of Cornwall's liveliest New Year's Eve parties. The local business district has put real effort into reviving the town's fancy dress tradition in recent years and on the night it shows; costumes fill the streets well before the countdown, from full pop-star get-ups to the odd inflatable dinosaur. 

Get down to Central Square in good time if you want the best view for the midnight countdown and the harbour fireworks. Bars fill up fast, and the walk from the seafront back up into town gets slow once the crowds are out, so build in extra time either side of midnight.

Newquay

• Crowds drift between the bars before converging on Central Square for the midnight countdown and harbour fireworks

St Ives

• The UK's third-largest fancy dress party, reportedly beaten only by London and Edinburgh
• Roads close to traffic by 6pm on the 31st, so the cobbled streets can fill with tens of thousands of costumed revellers
• Once the tide's out, the beach and harbour front turn into one huge open-air dance floor, building to the midnight fireworks

Looe

• Two fireworks displays from the Banjo Pier: an early family show at 6pm, then the main event at midnight
• Fancy dress is taken seriously here too
• Pubs and restaurants along the seafront run their own themed nights to match the mood

Lostwithiel

• Skips the beach or harbour countdown for a giants parade instead
• Towering puppets, drummers and pipers lead a procession of costumed locals through the streets
• Sets off around 11.30pm outside the Kings Arms and crosses the medieval bridge on the way to midnight, making for a stranger, more folkloric evening than the seafront parties elsewhere in Cornwall

Newquay's version centres on the harbour, with crowds working their way down from the pubs and restaurants for the midnight fireworks. Falmouth is worth considering as well; the town fills with events and live music, with fireworks closing out the night over the water. 

Looe runs its own fancy dress crowd along similar lines to St Ives, on a smaller scale and Mevagissey does a quieter harbourside version, with the pubs staying open late and everyone gathering by the water for midnight. None of these charge for entry, which makes any of them an easy add-on to your stay.

New Year's Eve Dining & Parties

For anyone who'd rather skip the street crowds altogether, a sit-down dinner with sea views is the other way to do New Year's Eve in Cornwall in style.
