Steps to a greener CornwallCaring for our environment

Five steps to a greener holiday
- Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
- Keep your towels for more than a day
- Turn off the lights when you’re not in the room
- Swap the car for walking, cycling and public transport
- Eat local, buy local, see local
The raw beauty of Cornwall’s coastline makes a awe-inspiring location for our luxury hotel, which is why at The Headland Hotel we believe in caring for our surroundings. We feel that it is essential to protect our stunning environment for the enjoyment of guests and residents, today and in the future.
We ensure we recycle as much as we can, buy goods locally and use recycled and environmentally friendly products where possible. We have also reduced the amount of waste produced and the quantity of water and power we use. At The Headland Hotel in Cornwall, we have formed a Green Team to look at every area of our business to ensure the smooth and sustainable running of every department.

Taking positive steps towards an eco-friendly hotel
- We have introduced self-closing taps to reduce water usage
- We have turned down the heating and hot water slightly
- We have added secondary glazing to the bedrooms to improve insulation and switched to low energy bulbs where possible
- We have switched to environmentally friendly cleaning products
- We have reduced paper usage by ensuring double sided printing
- We have asked guests to help reduce laundry by not changing their towels daily
- We encourage guests to take part in activities that do not involve using their cars
- We encourage staff to commute on foot, by bike, on public transport or to car share
- We have halved the amount of coal used on the fires and now make briquettes from waste paper
- We recycle glass, paper, tins, drinks cans, cardboard, batteries, copier toner and oil
- We manage the grounds sensitively to encourage native flora and fauna
- We have encourged the use of internet for bookings and confirmations
- We buy locally where possible
- We support local charities, schools and colleges.
- We have a Green Team to promote sustainable practices amongst staff and guests
- We regularly review our practices and make improvements where possible.
Local Cornish produce
We believe in sourcing the best quality local produce. Wherever possible we source food and products from within Cornwall, supporting the local West Country community and ensuring the highest quality and freshness of our goods. The majority of our food purchases come from within 30 miles of The Headland Hotel – for example Cornish meats, freshly landed fish and local dairy products. Favouring companies that can demonstrate their commitment to care for our environment, we also try and make sure that deliveries are made as efficiently as possible and only use suppliers with an approved Environmental Policy.
And it’s not just the food that we find locally: cleaning equipment is sourced from local companies, much of the furnishings and artwork have been sourced locally, our brochures are printed locally on recycled paper, and our stationery (from a sustainable source supporting a small community in South America) is bought within Newquay.
If we don’t look after our environment today, future generations will not be able to enjoy this beautiful location. We are currently awaiting grading under the Green Tourism Business scheme - for more inforrmation on this please visit www.green-business.co.uk.
