Environment & Community

The Headland isn’t part of a national chain; it’s a well-loved, family-run business. Owned by The Armstrong family since 1979, we’ve made improvements and repairs to the tune of £34 million, transforming the iconic hotel from a property on the brink, to a multi award-winning resort, complete with 91 five-star bedrooms,  five-star holiday cottages, state-of-the-art gym, luxury spaaward-winning dining and a £10 million Aqua Club complete with six pools and a sun terrace overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

Our commitment to …

The environment

We understand the pressing issues facing our environment and, by striving to reduce food miles and save energy, we’re doing our best to take care of it.

We use the Prefect Heating System app to quickly make adjustments on our heating. We’re very open to innovative ways to save energy and are big fans of our hybrid gym machines – they create energy rather than use it! The simple things don’t escape us though, paper recycling is paramount; we save an estimated 6-8 tonnes of landfill space every year by using our own cardboard compactor and promoting paper-saving initiatives.

In 2017 we were also pleased to go ‘plastic-straw free’.

Our commitment to…

Inspiring the next generation

We are passionate about the growing and developing the next generation of world-class hospitality professionals and are delighted to be the first Cornish hotel to have achieved our Springboard inspire accreditation – the Hospitality Industry’s Quality Assurance for work experience.

Our commitment to…

Local heritage

The National Trust looks after places of historic interest or natural beauty. Perched as we are on the iconic North Cornwall coast, this is of huge importance to us and we worked with the charity for several years.

When you stay at The Headland you are invited to make a donation of £1 upon check-out. This, along with several raffle fund-raising activities, meant that from 2014 – 2017 we have been able to present four cheques to the Trust – totalling more than £40,000. Some of the projects our guests have contributed to include:

Repaired and widened a section of slumped coast path at Porthcothan Bay.
Replacement fencing and footbridge repairs Holywell, along with regular litter picking.
Conservation work to the ash trees at the round garden in Crantock village.

We would like to say a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to all guests for helping to keep the coastlines and footpaths accessible for residents and visitors from far and wide.

We are now moving to support another important local charity, the Cornwall Community Foundation.

Our commitment to…

Supporting charitable causes

The Headland is very proud to announce the Cornwall Community Foundation as our chosen charity for the year. Since 2003, the Foundation has awarded more than £7.5 million to Cornish communities, supporting more than 2,500 local, grass-roots organisations. In 2017 alone, £575,000 was awarded in grants to strengthen communities in Cornwall and the lsles of Scilly.

Their aim is simple “We bring together people who want to help Cornish communities with projects that make a real difference”.

The Headland Staff are also encouraged and supported to take part in charitable fundraising events such as Race4Life, ROC 5k Run, Lupus and Macmillan coffee mornings. We also actively fundraise for St Francis Dog Home. Our staff is allowed to purchase furniture at reduced costs when making a charitable donation to those in need four-legged pooches.

Our commitment to…

Locally sourced ingredients

We are committed to supporting local food producers where possible. Cornwall has fantastic raw ingredients and we have built strong relationships with local suppliers, enabling us to keep the food miles low and the quality fresh.

When you dine with us, you’ll enjoy the best of Cornish fish and meat and you’ll quench your thirst with tipples from Cornish breweries and distillers.  We also use tasty ice creams and sorbets from Callestick Farm, when not making our own bespoke creations.  Other local suppliers include Rodda’s Creamery, Cornish Tea, Rosedown Eggs, West Country, St. Austell Brewery, Niles Bakery, Mathew Stevens and Celtic Fish & Game.
