Surf Sanctuary and Fistral Beach
When visiting Cornwall, a surf, SUP or kitesurf lesson is a must! At Surf Sanctuary we provide lessons in a variety of ocean sports whether you are a first-timer or an experienced water user looking to improve your skills. Our coaches are all highly accomplished local surfers with RLSS National Beach Lifeguard and ISA Surf Coach qualifications; they will craft your lesson to give you the ultimate experience.
The Surf Sanctuary will be open once again from Easter.
Fistral Beach, in Fistral Bay, is bounded by two promontories, Towan Head to the north and Pentire Point East to the south. The straight sandy beach faces west-northwest onto the Atlantic and is approximately 750 metres long. Backed by steep sand dunes and overlooked by the Headland Hotel, the beach is the venue for major international surfing competitions and a competition suite for judges and competitors has been built at North Fistral along with a surf museum.
The British Surfing Association, Newquay Surf Life Saving Club and the Newquay Boardrider Club are all based at Fistral Beach. The Cribbar, a reef at the north end of the beach, causes waves to break when the swell is high. It is considered to be Cornwall's premier "big wave" location with wave faces as high as 40 feet (12 m).
- Our Activities
Surfing is the quintessential Cornish ocean sport. Fistral Beach is widely regarded as one of Europe’s finest surfing beaches, and it’s the perfect place to start your surfing adventure. No one ever forgets their first surf session; fresh salty air, sand between the toes, rushing Atlantic surf, and that post-surf afterglow. Our surf coaches will tailor the lesson to your needs; surfing is among the most accessible sports going, and it’s been known to change lives forever.

Our Headland is surrounded by clear Atlantic water and stand up paddling (SUP) is the ultimate way to enjoy it. SUP originated in Hawaii hundreds of years ago, so you’ll be tapping right into the source of surf culture. The boards are very stable, and we keep to the calmer seas so everyone will enjoy paddling at their own pace. SUP is an incredibly healthy sport and once the basics are mastered, can be practised safely in many locations.
